Image editing can be used for many different effects. Even if you don't think you're interested in learning to use image editing software, you may find it useful for converting color photos to black and white, cropping, or just adjusting brightness and contrast a little. Of course, it's also useful for removing power polls, blemishes, and other distractions. And there are some neat effects you can achive with software too...
If you don't own Photoshop and you're reluctant to spend $300 on it, consider downloading Gimp from http://www.gimp.org -that's what I use, so any step-by-step instructions will be posted assuming you are using it too. For those who do own Photoshop or some other image editing software, the concepts will remain the same, you'll just have to read your manual or poke around and find the tools yourself.
